The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (17 December) approved the development of new All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) in the grand holy Tamil Sangam City, Madurai. Tamil Nadu AIIMS would come up at the Temple City Madurai at a cost of Rs 1,264 Crore at the Thopoor.

"Setting up of new AIIMS would not only transform health education and training but also address the shortfall of health care professionals in the region," said in official statement.
Madurai AIIMS will add 100 undergraduate MBBS seats and 60 BSc Nursing seats and will have 15-20 Super Specialty departments, the new institute will service around 1,500 outdoor patients on a daily basis. The institute campus will have a hospital, teaching block for medical and nursing courses, residential complex and allied facilities and services. The time frame for development of the new projects will be 45 months, including a pre-construction phase of 10 months, a construction phase of 32 months and commissioning period of three months.
